Sergio Fermariello
(Naples, 1961)
The artist lives and works in Naples. His research starts from the recovery of the models and family memories that extend to deeper research on the recovery of unconscious collective memory. Further in his career, he loses the focus on the object ending up with an “invisible shape and an empty content,” as the artist stated. What characterizes his works, later on, is the obsessive repetition of a tiny pictogram representing a warrior, defined by the artist as “unlimited writing”, as it covers the limited space of the canvas. He defines him selves “writer of a single word”, as the symbol of the warrior doesn’t bring to another symbol but repeats itself in its semantic self-referentiality. He is also present in some major international events such as the exhibition at the International Metropolis Kunstausstellung in Berlin in 1991 and the exhibition Les pictographes at the Musée de l'Abbaye Sainte-Croix-Les Sables d'Olonne, where Didier Ottinger invited him to present his work together with paintings of Klee, Mirò, Picasso, Penck, Sanejouand. In 1993 he was called by Achille Bonito Oliva to take part in the forty-fifth Venice Biennale with a solo exhibition room at the Italian Pavilion. In 1995 he exhibits some work of a three-dimensional nature in the show Alchemical Opus at the Galleria Arco in Turin. These works are halfway between painting and sculpture and constitute a further step in the young artist's career.
Among his solo and group exhibitions, we can mention: (Galleria Protiron, Spalato, 1989); (Galleria Lucio Amelio, Naples, 1989); Galleria Il Capricorno (Venice, 1990): Galeria Albrecht (Munich, 1990); Galleria Yvonne Lambert (Paris, 1992); XLV Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte Biennale di Venezia (Sala personale Padiglione Italia - Venice, 1993); Opus Alchemico (Galleria In Arco - Turin, 1995); Contemporanea 2 (Villa Olmo - Como, 1996); Homo necans (Galleria Lucio Amelio - Naples, 1996); Sergio Fermariello, Lavori 1990-1997 (Istituto Italiano di Cultura - Cologne, 1997); Istallazione: Avviso ai Naviganti, Castel dell'Ovo (Naples, 1999); Galleria Jan Wagner (Berlin, 1999); Inox (Castel Sant’Elmo - Naples, 2004); Avviso ai Naviganti (Sea Port Museum - New York, 2004); Guerrieri (Erica Fiorentini Arte Contemporanea - Rome, 2006); Sergio Fermariello (Ronchini Arte Contemporanea - Terni, 2008).
