SIMONA WELLER

(Roma, 1940)

Simona Weller lives and works in the medieval village of Calcata (VT). She graduated from the Academy of Rome after long study stays in the East (from Bangkok to Cairo), in 1973 she came to the attention of critics at the X Quadrennial in Rome with large abstract canvases where painting mixes with letters and writing. During the 70s she was present at the Quadrennial in Rome, at the Venice Biennale (1978 - Materialization of language curated by Mirella Bentivoglio) and in Sao Paulo, Brazil, at the International Kunstlerinnen in Berlin. A multifaceted artist, she has always combined her activity as a painter (and then also a ceramist) with that of a writer in a process of research and historical reconstruction on the presence of women in art: in 1976 she published an investigative book on Italian women artists of the twentieth century, Il Michelangelo's Complex, and an essay on female creativity, The Private as Politics.
